 Ministries

  • Acolytes: In our church acolytes are an important part of our liturgy. They play an active role in worship as crucifers, torchbearers, and first servers. We hope that children 4th grade and above will consider serving in this way. Adults are also welcomed to become acolytes. Training for this occurs occasionally throughout the year. If you or your child are interested then please reach out to Fr. Wesley.

  • Alpha: Every fall we run the Alpha Course which is a popular video-based, discussion class done in one of our member's home. It delves into the core beliefs of the Christian faith, and is great for those who have been in the church all their lives or would like to know more about the faith. Our hope is that all of our members will have participated in Alpha. For more info talk to Fr. Wesley.

  • Altar Guild: The altar guild works behind the scenes to ensure that everything for the service is ready to go. They set the altar, put out fresh linens, and help clean up after the service. If you are interested or have questions about this ministry then please contact Sandra Womack.

  • Bible Study: Every Wednesday we gather in the Parish Hall at 10 a.m. to discuss a chapter of the Bible. There is coffee and a great discussion every week. We can't promise that we stay on topic all the time, but you'll have fun and learn a lot. We also offer a service of Morning Prayer at 9:30 a.m. to anyone who wants to join us before our class starts at 10.

  • Chalice Bearers: This ministry also plays an important part of our Sunday liturgy. Chalice bearers may have to acolyte as well from time to time, but their main job is to distribute the wine during Communion.

  • Children's Ministry: Here at St. James the Less our kids aren't the future of the church, they are the church! We provide engaging and age-appropriate lessons for them during our Christian Formation Hour on Sundays, as well as other activities throughout the year. These classes happen at 9:15 on Sunday mornings.

  • Choir: We take music seriously here at St. James the Less. It is a vital part of our worshiping community, and we are blessed to have passionate and faithful members of our choir. They are led by Mr. Bob Wiesen, our Organist and Choir Director.

  • Christian Formation Hour: During the academic year we have classes for all ages on Sunday from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. We have our nursery for the infants, an elementary class for our kids, a youth class for our teenagers, and an adult class in the Parish Hall.

  • Creation Care: We recycle here at St. James the Less. We believe it is important to be good stewards of the good creation that God has given us.

  • Hospitality Committee: We have a group of parishioners who are dedicated to making sure every event we host is not only fun but is also well run. If you love hosting parties and events, and like working with a team then please reach out to Dari Shadwick.

  • Lector: As a lector you are responsible for reading the Old and New Testament lessons, and leading the congregation in the psalm appointed for the day. The lector also reads the Prayers of the People. If you enjoy reading aloud in public then consider joining this ministry.

  • Outreach:

    • Christian Cooperative Ministry: We are partnering with this Madison-based organization that serves the poor in our community. This is an important way that we serve those in our own community.

    • Church in the Yard: A few times a year we serve the homeless of Nashville at The Church of the Holy Trinity's Church in the Yard. We participate in the Eucharist that is celebrated in the church yard, and then hand out sandwiches that our parishioners made. We will usually make over 200 sandwiches. This is a wonderful ministry, and we hope that you will join us. We meet on the fifth Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity ( 615 6th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203).

  • Prayer Ministry: We meet every Wednesday night at the church at 6 p.m. Usually our time together is centered around a Eucharist service with extra time devoted for prayer. We are using Anglican prayer beads while we pray. We'd love for you to come join us as we pray for our nation, this community, our church, and for ourselves. Fr. Randy is our contact person.

  • Taekwondo Classes: Our very own Lisa Cate runs these classes on Monday and Thursday nights at the church for kids and teenagers in the community. If you are interested in taking classes please email Lisa Cate

  • Ushers: Likely the first person you meet when you walk into our church is one of our ushers. They make sure that all who enter our church feel welcomed. Along with handing out bulletins they also help newcomers learn a little more about our church.

  • Vestry: This is our governing body which works with the clergy to further the mission and ministry of the church. Those who are elected serve a three-year term.

  • Youth Ministry: It is our hope that the teenagers of the parish will be active participants in the life of the church. We try to have a monthly activity for our youth to gather and have fun. We also partner with other local youth groups, and do activities together. Our teenagers have their own class during Sunday Christian Formation Hour which allows them to discuss topics of faith with their peers. We are always delighted to have our youth participate in the worship service by being acolytes, lectors, and ushers.
